In a recent interview, Robert Beltran, who played Commander Chakotay in Star Trek: Voyager, commented that the franchise’s Prime Directive was “fascist.”
The Prime Directive was a United Federation of Planets dictate prohibiting interference with alien civilizations, particularly ones deemed less “advanced.” It was introduced in the first season episode “The Return of the Archons” of the original series.
“The idea of leaving any species to die in its own filth when you have the ability to help them, just because you wanna let them get through their normal evolutionary processes is bunk—it’s a bunch of fascist crap…”
To be fair, to violate or not violate this Prime Directive, depending on the specific circumstances, was often something Captain Kirk and others had to struggle with. Thought by some to be Gene Roddenberry’s statement on American involvement in Vietnam, this is an issue that still has metaphorical relevance in contemporary global politics.
It might also be something for humans to consider as they continue their own explorations of space…if some other more evolved civilization hasn’t already applied it (or the opposite) to us!
