That Old-Timey Secret Society Art

Untitled.jpg

I’ve always been fascinated by the culture of old-time American freemasonry…it is like this weird blending of the super square and conservative with the highly occult.

Atlas Obscura has a collection of images from the new book As Above, So Below: Art of the American Fraternal Society 1850-1930 which include photos, banners, and magic lantern slides. The website also manages to tie the subject matter in with the strange death of Justice Antonin Scalia at the headquarters of the International Order of St Hubertus.

Secret societies like the freemasons get a bad rap, but they are also responsible for keeping a lot of this mystery school material alive through the centuries. As with everything: use discernment!
